Acupuncture can help a broad range of conditions from simple muscular aches, through more serious diseases. It works by balancing your energy (Qi) in your body and reminding your body how it should work.
Below are some of the conditions that Dr Keown has had success with. He tends to focus on conditions that he knows Western medicine would struggle with:
Trigeminal neuralgia is a disabling severe pain in the face caused by inflammation of the nerve in the face.
Dr Keown has treated this in the Emergency department, on a number of occasions, with almost instant relief of symptoms.
Whilst Western medicine has little understanding of how to treat this, Chinese medicine has a clear understanding and acupuncture is the preferred technique.
including endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain
Much of women's health is well treated by Western medicine. This includes the fantastic advances in obstetric care and treatment of infections.
Where Dr Keown feels Chinese medicine and acupuncture is superior is in many chronic diseases especially in chronic pain and also the underlying cause of endometriosis. Acupuncture theory understands that the pain in these conditions is simply the messenger and rather than trying to 'kill' it acupuncture seeks to treat the underlying cause.
Facial palsy is a relatively rare condition that can occur from a stroke, or from Bell's palsy. The immediate treatment of this should be to visit Emergency department to ensure that the condition is not a stroke or something more serious.
Bell's palsy is caused by pressure on the nerve caused by excess fluid. Acupuncture works by opening the (acupuncture) channels to allow this fluid out and wake up the nerve.
Back pain is often poorly treated by Western medicine and simply rely on painkillers or, incredibly, surgery!
Acupuncture (and it's associated lifestyle recommendations) is incredibly useful for back pain.
There are many other conditions that Dr Keown has treated successfully with acupuncture.
